TUESDAY MARCH 14, 2015

Off The Record presents: DSettlement

@ The Arts Incubator

8:00 PM

Off the Record continues with the legendary D-Settlement.

The band, originally formed by Marvin Tate, has gathered a mélange

of musicians and voices to embrace what is lost in music today:

hard-hitting musicians tackling real issues. D-Settlement's genre-defying, full-bodied revue takes the audience to the other side of midnight: black funk, jazzy riffs, rock bass, and frenetic spoken

word riffs on a groove.

The Arts Palette and VIRGIN HOTELS presentDaniel Knox & Liam Hayes

Virgin Hotel

203 N. Wabash, 25th Floor

8:00 PM - set 1

9:00 PM - set 2

Long known for darkly distorting traditional American popular song styles, Daniel Knox employs a new, more wide-ranging sonic palette on his latest work. The ten songs on Daniel Knox feature his powerful and unique baritone with an array of brass, strings, synthesizers, his usual band, and guest contributions from Brett Sparks (The Handsome Family) and Thor Harris (Bill Callahan, Swans, Shearwater).

Knox has scored for film and theater and has performed with artists such as Jarvis Cocker, the Handsome Family, Richard Buckner, Swans, Rasputina, Josephine Foster, Jon Langford, Nina Nastasia, Rufus Wainwright, Marc Ribot and Andrew Bird.

In the mid 90’s, Liam Hayes started gaining fans and grabbing the attention of major labels while making music under the name Plush here in his native Chicago. Because he’s been guarded with the press and avoids social media, he hasn’t gotten the recognition that many think he deserves. Now based in Milwaukee, the man some call a “mastermind” has released a new album of stripped-down music that's all power pop and no frills.

MCA Live: Avery R. Young

(Part of Faheem Majeed's MCA Exhibition Program)

6:00 PM to 7:00 PM

Examining the consumption of Black American music in both of its capacities as commodity and culture, multidisciplinary artist Avery R. Young investigates the role race has played in the creating and presentation of this great American export. Referencing this music—from the work song of the slave to the recolonization of modern day hip-hop—this instructive lecture-style performance combines song, storytelling, and digital and visual art forms.
